Epson shows developers the future at Droidcon London

Droidcon London will feature a new face this year as Epson joins the Android community for the first time. The company, best known for its range of printers and projectors, will be showcasing its unique Moverio BT-100 see-through Android-powered smart glasses that present new opportunities to developers, particularly in the realm of augmented reality.

With over 1,000 developers in attendance, the company sees the event as the perfect place to build relationships with the Android community, who will have the potential to create pioneering applications using Moverio’s revolutionary technology.

During the four-day event, the company will be joined by several developers, from around the world, that have already created applications for Moverio. Visitors to Epson’s stand will see first-hand some of the opportunities that exist, while conference attendees will discover how they can take advantage of the product’s unique capabilities to enhance reality.

At Epson’s stand, visitors will be able to see how one developer has used Moverio’s innovative technology to create a new, gesture control application that takes augmented reality to the next level. Epson will also present a museum guide application, a night vision system and a shooting game where the landscape changes as the user moves their head.

During Droidcon’s weekend Hackathon, developers will have the chance to create a new application of their own that makes the most of Moverio’s technology. Members of the winning team will each receive a pair of Epson see-through smartglasses, worth more than £400, fitted with an AV input board designed specifically for Android developers.

Additionally, at Droidcon’s conference, one half of the team that invented Moverio, Mr Hiroyuki Baba – the ‘B’ from BT-100 – will give attendees an insight into how people and companies around the world have been merging the real and digital worlds. He will also discuss the opportunities that exist with augmented reality and the capabilities of Moverio.

Valerie Riffaud-Cangelosi, senior manager at Epson Europe, commented: “In the same way that smart devices presented new opportunities when they were launched a decade ago, Moverio sets new boundaries for Android developers to take applications to the next level.

“We believe Moverio has the potential to offer much more than any tablet or smart device, and presents an opportunity to change the way the world consumes information. But to achieve this, we need the expertise and creative minds of the Android community to help us develop applications that make the most of our product’s revolutionary technology. And that is why we are excited and looking forward to playing a key role in this year’s Droidcon event in London.”

Droidcon London 2013 takes place at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London, from 24-27 October 2013. Epson is the event’s platinum sponsor and will be exhibiting in the main hall. By visiting the stand, developers will receive a 50% discount on a Moverio BT-100, while visitors can also enter the company’s Night Vision Challenge for a chance to win a pair of the Android-powered smart glasses on each day of the exhibition.
