The Cheap Seats in Education.

Context matters. Every teacher works in a different setting, teaches their subject in a different style and delivers content to pupils who are working at different stages and abilities. The complexity of the classroom is difficult to breakdown, there is no one strategy to improve outcomes, but there are things we all can consider and do better.  Every child is entitled to an equal education but this doesn’t come from simply supporting pupils and treating them equally; true inclusion comes when all pupils have the support they need. What if teachers could genuinely meet the needs of all their pupils? Much has changed in classrooms in recent years, affecting how lessons are taught and how teachers keep students engaged – as children become immersed in technology from such a young age. How teachers use technology to support pupils’ learning rather than hinder it, is relatively new territory. Research by Epson shows that 40% of teachers saw a correlation between children being unable to clearly view a screen or display and lower exam and test scores.  Seating plans, the size of a screen and its resolution clearly matter and in a landscape where technology is now dominating work and life, it needs to be taken seriously. The use of audio-visual (AV) technologies in lessons is…

Projectors or Flat Panel – Factors to consider

’Do I need an all-in-one projector solution, a whiteboard or a flat panel?’ That is a good question. Not surprisingly, it’s one which presents itself to many people when they are deciding on the optimum display for their meeting rooms. This post will explore the importance of screen size, cost-effectiveness, image quality and eye health, helping you to find the answer to your question. Afterall, when you’re choosing the right display for your business, there’s a lot to consider. The best place to start is with finding the right screen size for your room. This simple choice is so important – you need to display content clearly to have effective meetings. You wouldn’t be comfortable working at a desk where the screen is too small – it’s not good for your eyes and can compromise the quality of on-screen content. For the same reasons, you need a screen size that is correct for your meeting room. Achieving the optimal screen size means replicating the average desktop experience for all participants in your meeting, including those furthest away from the screen. According to the Snellen eye sight test, to make an image appear the same size when it is twice as far away, it needs to be twice as tall or four times the size…

Epson Win-A-Robot contest JURY MEMBER INTERVIEWS

Your new co-worker – how robotics and automation technologies are shaping the workplace of the future Patrick Schwarzkopf, Managing Director of the VDMA Robotics and Automation Association, has been working at the VDMA in Frankfurt since 1999. Having built up the VDMA Factory Automation Forum, and with past experience at EUnited Robotics, the European Machine Vision Association and the International Federation of Robotics, Patrick has a unique take on the role that robotics and automation technologies are playing in industry. 1. When did you first get involved in the robotics industry? As a kid I loved “science kits” and constructing electrical gadgets. I also tried building a robot-like contraption using the Fischer Technik engineering kit, but it wasn’t a big success. In 1999 I joined the VDMA (German Engineering Industry Association) to build up the VDMA Factory Automation Forum, which had robotics at its core. I suddenly saw the real-life applications of robots from visiting factories, research centres and trade shows – it blew my mind.   2. What is it about robotics/automation that really fascinates you? It reflects human ingenuity. To be able to model a machine after the human arm, with the ability to take over tedious tasks with more strength and greater precision, is amazing. Robots can relieve people from repetitive…

How robotics will shape Europe – and the policy that will support it

MEP EVA KAILI Member of European Parliament – Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament MEP Eva Kaili is a member of the jury for Epson Europe’s Win-A-Robot contest. She is a respected member of the European Parliament and has been actively involved in policy that surrounds robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) in Europe as well as promoting digital skills at EU level. Here, she shines a light on the role policy must play as robotics and AI increasingly become a part of our lives. Underlining the many possibilities that these products can bring to people, businesses and society, the core message comes down to balance. 1. As Chair of the European Parliament’s Science and Technology Options Assessment body, what is the potential for the robotics industr Chairing the European Parliament's Science and Technology Options Assessment (STOA) has given me a broad view of the impact of the robotics industry. I can see how robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) can be implemented across sectors, from farming to space, and how they are transforming our daily lives, from the simple (such as turning on the lights in our houses) to the more complex (preventing diseases in the health sector and creating new materials for us to wear). In addition,…

Lending a hand (or two) to European industry – how robotics is driving new growth opportunities for SMEs

Imre Paniti, PhD., is a member of the jury for Epson’s Win-A-Robot contest. As National Coordinator of euRobotics Week in Hungary, a research fellow at the Institute for Computer Science & Control at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and a supervisor at the Budapest University of Technology & Economics, he has a strong background in robotics and mechanical engineering. 1. What is it about robotics/automation that really fascinates you? My research interests lie in industry 4.0, sensor integration, Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) and cobotics. Specifically, I am focused on rapid prototyping and patenting, as well as the role of robots in the workforce. Contrary to popular concerns that the growth of robotics will eliminate jobs for humans, I am optimistic regarding the effect of industrial robotics on the human workforce. In fact, I’m sure that robots will play a key role in creating new jobs; robots are not actually replacing the human hand but increasing speed, strength and precision. Moreover, robots are giving an extra hand or two to the production line for a better European industry. If industries are to keep up with larger sales volumes, it will often make more sense for humans and robots to collaborate in a sort of symbiotic behaviour that will improve efficiency in factories. I think we…

How robotics is shaping industries – and why the narrative around robotics needs to change

Professor Darwin Caldwell Professor Caldwell is a member of the jury for Epson’s Win-A-Robot contest. He is a noted international researcher and academic who has published more than 500 papers on robotics. He is currently Deputy Director of the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, Italy.   1. What is it about robotics/automation that really fascinates you? What drew you to this sector? I’ve always been interested in science and tech right from when I was very young. At university, I studied what was probably one of the only robotics courses that existed at that time. Some people do mechanical engineering or computer science and drift into robotics as a topic they like in those areas. But I went deliberately into robotics. I believed that robotics and automation would change human lives – the way we do things, the way we live. 2. Given you have experience in both the UK and Italian markets, are there noticeable differences between markets in terms of approach When I first started in robotics and people would ask about jobs in that field, there were only one or two jobs you could get in robotics every year. People might study robotics and end up doing something else like computer science. It was extremely hard to get a robotics…

Robotics technology and the growth of European business: What Epson’s Win-A-Robot contest means for the future of the industry

1. When did you first get involved in the robotics industry? Epson as a company have always not only owned their own factories, but also developed their own automation technologies to manufacture their products. With the company’s heritage in watchmaking this meant devising extremely precise and efficient automation solutions to manufacture Seiko Epson watches. This was my introduction to automation in fact. 15 years ago, I joined Epson’s internal factory automation department and led the team for 10 years.  This experience brought me to join the Robotics Division three years ago. 2. What is it about robotics/automation that really fascinates you? Automation can release operators from repetitive works and make more time for them to focus on creative works. Also, robotics can produce products which cannot be made by human beings. Their speed, precision and efficiency allow them to reduce waste in manufacturing by considerable amounts. Not only reducing the primary materials needed to make a product, but also reducing if not eliminating entirely the number of goods that don’t make it off the manufacturing line due to production failures.   3. What is the most exciting use of robotics and automation technologies that you have seen in recent years? There is no one particular example that I can highlight, advances in robotics and automation…
