Epson Achieves Platinum Rating for Sustainability from EcoVadis

Platinum rating places Epson in the top 1% of all companies and industries

Epson, a global technology firm, is proud to announce that it has earned a platinum rating for sustainability from EcoVadis, a leading provider of business sustainability ratings. This prestigious recognition highlights Epson’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards across environmental practices, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.

The platinum rating places Epson in the top 1% of all companies and industries assessed by EcoVadis, reflecting continuous progress in the company’s sustainability efforts. Epson increased its overall score from 77 to 83 points out of 100, despite EcoVadis implementing stricter evaluation criteria. This independent certification assures customers that Epson is one of the most responsible and accountable companies in its sector.

In the recent evaluation, Epson achieved outstanding rankings within its industry, placing in the top 1% for both Environment and Labour & Human Rights, and in the top 2% for Sustainable Procurement. Additionally, the company ranks in the top 30% for Ethics. It is important to note that the EcoVadis assessment criteria have become increasingly stringent; this year, achieving a platinum medal requires being in the top 1% of all assessed companies.

EcoVadis is a globally recognised ratings organisation covering more than 220 industry categories and evaluating over 130,000 companies across 180 countries. Epson’s latest platinum rating is a testament to its ongoing commitment and notable improvements towards sustainable growth over the past year.

“This platinum certification follows our continuous implementation of measurable initiatives aimed at identifying and resolving societal and environmental challenges,” said Takanori Inaho, President of Epson Europe. “We have always been guided by the principle of Sho Sho Sei, which represents our commitment to continuous improvement and the development of compact, efficient, and precise product technology. Our proprietary technologies contribute to practical climate solutions, and we recognise our responsibility to mitigate our impact on the planet.”

Epson is making significant strides toward its 2050 goal of becoming carbon-negative and underground resource-free. Key achievements in FY23 include:

- Decarbonisation: Following the switch to 100% renewable electricity use across Epson's fully owned global sites in 2023, Epson Europe has continued to make further improvements to its decarbonisation aims. Business travel emissions were reduced by 19% (in fiscal year 2023 compared to fiscal year 2022), and optimised deliveries from Asian factories are projected to cut future CO2 emissions by 10-50% per container. Plans for a biomass plant in Japan will further reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

 - Social Responsibility: Epson has enhanced its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through comprehensive training initiatives. The company’s Indonesian and Philippine’s factories have been awarded Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) Platinum status for ethical labour practices.

 - Governance Strengthening: Epson has received renewed certification from Bureau Veritas for aligning its operations with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), making it a trailblazer in this area.

Boris Manev, Sustainability Director at Epson Europe B.V., stated, “We have a clear vision: to pioneer sustainable innovation and set new standards in environmental responsibility. Our groundbreaking initiatives, such as advancing textile recycling and collaborating with fashion industry leaders, demonstrate that sustainability and business success can go hand in hand. Our investments in carbon capture and renewable energy are key milestones on our journey towards a carbon-negative future.

“This platinum accreditation is the result of hard work and highlights the steadfast commitment from the entire Epson team as we strive for a sustainable future. Our rating not only reflects our leadership in product excellence and innovation but also our dedication to making our industry more sustainable.”
