RIOT CHOOSES EPSON’S SURELAB D3000 FOR FLEXIBILITY AND EFFICIENCY

Riot Photobooks is a Dubai-based company that offers photobook printing solutions.

Background

Photobooks – books where photographs make a significant contribution to the overall content and subject – are often used as coffee table books and are increasingly being used as alternatives to traditional photo albums. What’s more they can also be mass produced and given away as souvenirs.

Riot Photobooks offers a free downloadable software program that allows potential customers to create their own photobook, using pre-designed templates in different book sizes. Once the user has completed their photobook, the company receives a finalised copy and prints out the book according to the specifications defined by the customer.

Key features

The Epson SureLab D3000 combines Epson’s proven Micro Piezo printhead technology with its original ink and LUT to deliver accurate reproduction and maximum resolution of 1440 x 1440dpi. Print-outs offer a quality and colour consistency that is comparable to Epson's pro-graphic printers.

The printer uses Epson’s UltraChrome D6 6-colour photo ink-set, that delivers a wide colour gamut, exceeding that of silver halide, and yielding more vivid and lifelike prints with excellent black density.

In addition, the Epson SureLab D3000 is power efficient and uses significantly less energy than conventional wet labs, resulting in less impact on the environment and reducing the total cost of ownership. The new dry-lab printer also makes print jobs easy to manage with its optional 'Order Controller' software. The SL-D3000 begins printing quickly without the need to warm-up chemicals and can automatically move finished prints to an optional A4 job sorter.

Challenges

According to Riot Photobooks’ senior executives, two of the company’s biggest challenges were printing in smaller sizes, because of the difficulty of cutting and changing rolls, and the large amount of wastage created by large format printers.

In line with this, the company sought a reliable printer that would give them the ability to offer online photo printing in any size. Riot Photobooks went around some of the region’s trade shows in search for a solution. A number of leading printer manufactures were considered, but fell short because of their high cost and the inconsistency of the solutions they offered.

Solution

The company eventually found its answer in Epson’s SureLab D3000 – a six-colour compact professional digital dry lab that has been designed to meet the demands of high-quality photo print production. The printer was seen as the ideal solution, both in terms of reliability and flexibility, to meet the requirements of Riot Photobooks’ customers.

Following the installation of Epson’s SureLab D3000, Riot Photobooks is now able to offer its customers the choice to produce their designs on a variety of materials between 4 and 12 inches wide. In addition to photobooks, customers can also choose to print cards, invitations, flyers and promotional leaflets on dedicated glossy, lustre and matte paper.

Successful Results

Since the installation of the Epson SureLab D3000, Riot Photobooks has reported key improvements in the colour quality of their prints and faster processing, while the printer is also extremely easy to use thanks to its new interface. The company can now easily print photos, across any size requirement without any issues, while also being assured of the quality and colour of the print-outs.

Rodney Saldanha, Managing Director, Riot Photobooks, commented: “Epson’s SureLab D3000 has proved to be an ideal solution for us, offering not only excellent quality output, but also maximum cost efficiency. Moreover, our staff found the printer to be extremely easy to use and they have particularly pointed out the speed and flexibility it offers. The after-sales support we received from Epson has also been excellent, ensuring that any minor problems are overcome quickly.”

Most importantly, since installing the new printer, Riot Photobooks has witnessed an increased return customer rate, that can be attributed to the high quality and excellent presentation of its final product.
