86% of energy saving achieved by Energy Saving Trust

Print supplier Office Odyssey, working in collaboration with Energy Saving Trust, reduces of CO2 by 86% (1062.25 kg) and energy (235,46 kWh) over 3 years with Epson business inkjet printers

Energy Saving Trust are forecast to save the environment around 86% in CO2 emissions and energy consumption with the step of switching their laser printer fleet to Epson’s business inkjet printers. This calculation was conducted by Epson’s CO2 and electricity calculator and is based on a three-year comparison period between Epson’s WorkForce range and competing laser printers.

The Energy Saving Trust is an independent organisation dedicated to promoting energy efficiency, low carbon transport and sustainable energy use, whose aim is to address the climate emergency and deliver the wider benefits of clean energy as we transition to net zero. When they were contacted by Office Odyssey, a supplier of sustainable print solutions, they took quick interest in the energy improvements they could implement in their London and Edinburgh offices.

Thousands of pages worth of energy reports each month are produced by Energy Saving Trust, therefore the need for a more sustainable solution to printing was needed.

Paul Bellew, director at Office Odyssey, said: “As a social enterprise that sells sustainable printing solutions, it was refreshing to work with such an enthusiastic customer as the Energy Saving Trust. We began the conversation with their IT director, and it was clear that the values of the Energy Saving Trust were in the right place across the business, and we had their attention from the get go.

"Not only did they appreciate our energy-saving proposition, but they were amazed at how little the eco-conscious printing technology would cost them. It shattered any misconceptions that energy efficiency would cost more in terms of printer equipment, and they were particularly impressed at the print speed of the WorkForce Mono Enterprise.”

The products installed include the Epson WorkForce Enterprise WF-C21000 D4TW and WF-C5790DWF  in London, and the WorkForce Enterprise WF-M20590D4TW, EcoTank ET-M1180, EcoTank ET-3750, and another WorkForce Enterprise WF-C21000 D4TW in their Edinburgh office.

After first establishing interest, Office Odyssey and Epson provided Energy Saving Trust with an onsite demonstration of its products, including a ‘push the button test’, where an Epson desktop inkjet printer is compared side-by-side with a competing laser printer. A button is pushed that sends one print to both printers at the same time, and an energy monitor compares the energy consumption of both devices. The ‘test’ gives a clear idea not only of the low energy consumption of business inkjet versus laser, but also the significantly faster first page out time (FPOT) of the inkjet, which doesn’t need to heat up in order to create a print.

Bob Buckley, Group Head of IT at Energy saving trust, said: “We have found the experience of working with Office Odyssey a very collaborative one, with their expert advice and support on how to identify, develop and provide a sustainable solution for us, was a straightforward and simple process to do. We would advise other organisations and businesses looking to reduce their energy and carbon emissions to consider looking at alternative printer options.”
