In this buyer’s guide, we’ll take you through those options and outline the key questions you should be asking. What is a business printer? Let’s start with the fundamentals. There’s a lot of noise when it comes to striving for sustainability, and it’s important to me and to Epson that we shine a light for eager businesses to navigate their way through it all. While I’ve written this guide primarily for start-ups and SMEs, a category many of our UK partners fall into, it has equal relevance for large corporates, and I hope it can offer a useful reference point for business of all shapes and sizes. At the same time, while the narrative is aimed at entrepreneurs and business leaders, I equally want this to be something that can be read and understood by any employee, in any role, across any company. ‘Survive then thrive’ tends to be the most popular approach for young start-ups and SMEs, and typically focusses entirely on driving profit, while sustainability can often be viewed as daunting, supplementary, and even unnecessary. But if you plan on sustaining your business, there’s no better way to futureproof yourself against sustainability regulations, public scrutiny, competitor businesses, and customer churn than by proactively integrating sustainability practices into your business. I won’t elaborate on the moral ethics of it – and I hope if you’ve read this far, I won’t have to. Here is a series of nine, sequential but also standalone practices…

Epson welcomes visitors to its stand at drupa this year (Hall 5, stand D20). It’s all about personalisation and on-demand production as Epson welcomes visitors to its stand at drupa this year (Hall 5, stand D20). It’s been almost five years since the last drupa, Europe’s major showpiece for the commercial print industry, and everyone is looking forward to a wonderful show this year in Dusseldorf, from May 28 to June 7. Epson is genuinely excited to be demonstrating the many significant advances it has made to its digital inkjet technologies and to show how it is continuing to deliver highly innovative, compact and efficient printing solutions. We will be demonstrating our advanced capabilities across a broad range of wide format printing, from large industrial equipment (such our SurePress labelling and Monna Lisa direct-to-fabric machines) to our many smaller, compact printers designed for quality colour printing on a wide variety of different materials and surfaces. A key theme for Epson at drupa this year is meeting the demand for localised production as the industry moves away from one-sized mass production toward more personalised products made on-demand. People are looking for beautifully designed items that brighten their lives and Epson aims to demonstrate how it has geared its manufacturing to meet this need. On stand…

It’s just over a year since the UK Government launched its Digital Strategy in June 2022, with ministers heralding the policy as a “vision for harnessing digital transformation and building a more inclusive, competitive and innovative digital economy”. Beneath the bold statement, the government’s policy document states the importance of Digital Foundations being laid as the bedrock of its strategy. This ranges from critical infrastructure, such as high-speed broadband, to future-facing technology, including Artificial Intelligence. Yet how are government organisations themselves aligning with their own digital strategy? Research commissioned by Epson with 150 IT decision makers in central and local government organisations show as many as 98% say they are now familiar with the policy. Despite this high awareness, however, only a third (33%) state their organisation has fully transitioned to digital processes. Many departments are already moving away from paper-based operations, instead converting documents and data to the cloud. Progress is being made. But with two thirds of IT government still on their digitalisation journey, there remains much to do. Positive about the opportunities ahead Our snapshot of views among the government’s IT leaders — the beating heart of government service digitalisation — reveals a largely confident and positive outlook on the journey ahead: Confidence is…

Not having tangible print outs of photos could be harming our ability to remember Dr. Linda Henkel is a professor and currently Chair of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT, USA. She is a Cognitive Psychologist who specialises in research on memory in everyday settings. Dr. Henkel has published ground-breaking research on how taking and viewing photos shapes people's memories of their experiences. Her work has appeared in journals such as Psychological Science; Memory; Psychology & Aging and Journal of Memory and Language to name but a few. Dr Henkel has worked with Epson Europe on its latest research for its #Power of Print# campaign which looks at how printing, when done responsibly, can help us hold on to memories for longer The study found that just 2 per cent of photos make it off our mobile phones and onto our walls, and over a third of people also admitted to not having any printed pictures of family or friends at home. For Dr Henkel, having photos on display in our homes and in our workplace is an important way of helping to strengthen these memories, whilst also increasing our feelings of social connectedness and wellbeing. She explains: I grew up surrounded by photos. My father was a…

Why printing is important for childrens’ development Leanne Hall is an experienced Clinical Psychologist with additional qualifications in health and fitness and has led an impressive career as a therapist and health coach spanning 20 years. Leanne Hall has worked with Epson Europe on its latest research for its ”Power of Print” campaign. This looks at printing, and the benefits of printed materials and photos have on children’s early education. For Leanne Hall, printed materials are an integral part of helping to strengthen children’s connections and sense of identity in their early years and can have benefits for teaching too. She explains: Technology has made many aspects of our lives easier. We have instant access to a whole range of information at the click of a mouse, and many of us can even do our jobs from the comfort of home. Smartphones in particular have become so much more than a device to send and receive phone calls. For some of us, they contain our whole life including hundreds and thousands of photos capturing countless moments and experiences with loved ones. So, with all these digital solutions, why print out materials and photos? And as parents, how can we navigate all of the options and ensure that we are giving our children the best…

Education is arguably the single most important investment a society can make in its future. And most people only get one chance at it. As a result, there’s a huge weight of responsibility on policymakers and teachers to get it right. The quest to find the ideal approach, particularly regarding technology’s role, has sparked passionate debates and extensive research into the best way to run an education system. On one side there are people who extol its virtues almost without exception. On the other, those who point to the detrimental effect of excessive screen time and social media, suggesting that fewer digital systems should be in teachers’ and learners’ hands. Amidst this ongoing battle, Sweden’s recent shift in perspective on technology in classrooms, thanks in part to their Minister of Education performing a sharp U-turn 1, highlights the need for a nuanced approach. So, who truly holds the key to unlocking the right path forward: the proponents of edtech or the sceptics? In answering this question, it’s important to understand both views. 1 https://thepeninsulaqatar.com/article/07/06/2023/swedish-schools-to-reduce-screens-increase-books The positive case for edtech Advocates of continuous improvement in edtech believe it has made life easier for everyone in the sector. They point to the fact that instead of using pen and paper, students now use laptops to take notes…
