How to create a memorable movie experience

Experiences are the new must-have item – just ask any millennial and they’re sure to list off a ream of places they want to go and things they want to do. It’s no longer about owning the next sports car or big TV, but creating memories that will last a lifetime. Cinema is one of the most exciting places where this is happening. Films are no longer restricted to multiplexes – outdoor cinema burst open the door and brought people together to watch their favourite movies on boats, under railway arches and in parks.  But it hasn’t ended there – innovative entertainment companies such as Secret Cinema are creating immersive events in London, America and Australia, where they bring the film to life with actors, sets and music to transport you into the film itself. While experiences may have become the must-do item, that’s not to say that they’re easy to come by or even cheap. Whether you’ve missed out on a sought-after ticket or are looking to create a more budget-friendly event, why not create an interactive cinema experience that will let your family and friends step into the action.   Here’s our guide to bringing your movie night to life and creating a memorable experience. Pick the right movie This isn’t just…

Attitudes to print are changing, but paper remains king

What is the role of print in the digital workplace? How are our needs for printing services changing as our behaviour in the office evolves? These are questions on the minds of organisations in the midst of digital transformation, particularly those seeking a newfound competitive edge. How do they integrate print into new workflows that prioritise the delivery of digital services? Those planning to introduce digitised workflows and processes would do well to remember the words of management guru Peter Drucker: “Culture eats strategy for breakfast”. In other words, people tend to default to established norms of behaviour, regardless of how much you tell them to behave. People will print when they want to print. Change only happens when the emerging integrates coherently into established patterns of behaviour. The modern office This is not to say the office of the future will look the same as the office of today – far from it. Organisations are reimagining workflows and processes around digital, enhancing agility, collaboration and performance, not to mention becoming more customer-centric. But these faster, connected, and more flexible workflows haven’t led to a decline in print, as some have predicted. Quite the opposite. In the same way streaming music has led to a vinyl revival, and e-books have encouraged more of us…

Why I believe monozukuri is not only the art of manufacturing, but also an art for society

Since starting as an engineer in the printing business in the late 1970s, I could not have imagined that Epson would become the company it is today: a global technology leader with a mission to better society and the world we live in. It surprises people to know that Epson is much more than a printer company and, in an age where technology is all around us, I want people to know about the technological advances that Epson brings. We have a passion for opening up new domains with our original technologies and it is this aspiration to try new things and the desire to move towards the unexpected that is needed as we move into an era where technology is becoming increasingly integral in our lives. People are hesitantly accepting the benefits technology will bring to their workplace in terms of increased productivity, but at the same time feel increasingly alienated and resistant. As manufacturers, it is our role to alleviate these fears and create products that help solve real problems and improve people’s lives; as organizations, it is our responsibility to integrate technology into the workplace; and as a society, it is our role to accept the opportunities that technology presents.  A positive force in society But I have to admit that…

Forget everything you thought you knew about projectors

Take a pass on supersized TVs and discover how a projector could redefine your home entertainment If you were asked to imagine a living room the chances are that you would picture a cosy room with big sofas, a coffee table, perhaps a fireplace, and usually in a prominent position, a TV. Japan’s still got it: why hardware still has the edge

Over the last century Japan has mastered the art of developing a host of “world first” technological innovations that have revolutionised the way we play and work. From the pocket calculator in the 1970s, the Walkman personal music player in 1979 which changed the way we consume music on the go, and more recently androids (humanoid robots) which speak, look and act like people. All these groundbreaking products perfectly fitted the needs of the times, generated new value, and were able to anticipate what people needed, perhaps even before they realized it themselves.  Powerhouse through the decades In the 90s and 00s the country took a hit from financial woes such as the collapse of the Bubble Economy and intensifying competition from both western countries and China. Although some companies have fallen by the wayside, others have proved that Japan’s capability for innovation and technology industry has been rebooted and is now stronger than ever. While the country’s stock as a powerhouse in products such as TVs and white goods may have fallen, Japan has returned to its status as a global power-house in electronic hardware for use in certain consumer and business markets through developing and identifying products in fast growing product categories – from printers to robotics. Successful companies are building on…

How to upgrade your conference room TV?

Businesses with dated, dusty, power-sapping boardroom TVs are looking to upgrade in 2018. In a world where screen size really matters, should this upgrade be merely to a newer flat-panel display or the latest high-performance projectors? Here are five tips to help you decide which is best for you: Cost may not be your biggest concern, but value might be. Despite both being feature rich, modern flat-panel displays tend to be more expensive, especially when scaling up. The average 84-inch flat panel display costs approximately six times more than an Epson projector capable of projecting a 100-inch display. If you are considering the return on investment, then cost per inch of screen size is certainly a factor. Ease of use comes into consideration when you are buying technology with multiple users in mind. Consider the amount of times a meeting starts with half of the participants working out how to get the presentation up onto the screen and the other half searching for the right remote. This not only loses the presenter time, but also their credibility and sense of professionalism. By utilising software such as Network Projection, Multi-PC Projection, or the iProjection App, you can present the content you want to display quickly and easily via a simple user interface. Think about the…

Colourful and smart will be the new fashion for Digital Printing

Smart labels have been around for a while, but mostly these are monochrome and involve separate print production and chip encoding processes. All this takes time, is less flexible, more expensive and a lot more complex – especially for short print runs where quick turnaround is required. This has changed with an announcement from Epson that it can now offer technology to allow users to produce colourful, high-quality smart labels in bespoke quick print runs. It is relevant to companies of all sizes operating in today’s fast-paced digital age. Working closely with American label systems specialist FlexStr8, Epson and its resellers can now offer either RFIDor NFCencoding inline on the ColorWorks label printing technology – RFID with the ColorWorks C7500 or NFC with the ColorWorks C3500. These new Epson-based solutions allow high resolution full-colour smart labels to be printed and encoded in one step. The Epson C7500 prints to a high quality (1200 x 600dpi) and with a full speed of 300m/second and the Flexsr8 snap-on encoder operates simultaneously. Apart from the eye-catching attraction of colour in promotional applications, it is also mandatory for some industrial applications; the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), for instance, is required by international law to be colour coded. RFID and NFC are wireless…

Smart classrooms will encourage life-long students to self-educate

Have you noticed the different way generations talk? I’m not making a wise-crack about monosyllabic teenagers or poor grammar. I’m talking about the ‘google it’ phenomenon. Recognise it? While my wife and I can happily while away a lunchtime ‘discussing’ the date of an old album release or the plot of a long-unread novel, our teenage children find the competing justifications and memories frustrating. ‘Just google it’ they chorus, shaking their heads at their ‘obsolete’ 40-something parents. Something has changed. Where as my generation were taught to value a cannon of knowledge, millennials take pride in their ability to navigate to the information they require for any task or discussion. From ‘jobs for life’ to ‘life-long learning’ And that’s a good thing! The world is changing rapidly. Our economic models and job markets are expected to undergo significant disruption and revision. New technologies like artificial intelligence, augmented reality, 3D printers, robots and cobots (to name a few) are on the verge of becoming more integrated into businesses and homes. The ‘jobs for life’ mantra of our grandparent’s generation, has been replaced by the likelihood that children born in Europe today may need to switch jobs and even industries a number of times over their careers. In order to transition successfully, future generations will need…
